Despite a steady increase in recycling tonnage over the past 20 years, virgin material capacity has outpaced recycling capacity and thus kept recycling rates relatively low. In the US, recycling & composting accounts for roughly 32% of municipal solid waste generation. However, we can only recycle materials that stay in our waste management system, the best case for environmental litter is costly cleanup and landfill.
